The Financial Aid Process

Navigating the financial aid process can be daunting, but understanding the key steps is crucial for receiving aid and lowering the cost of your education. From completing the FAFSA to managing aid responsibly, we'll walk you through the entire process.

The Steps

  • Complete the FAFSA

The FAFSA might feel overwhelming, but it's your ticket to saving thousands on your education, and we're here to help you every step of the way. Use our FAFSA Helper to get started. Then, find a quiet space, gather your parents or spouse, and follow our step-by-step instructions to complete the application effortlessly.

    FAFSA Application Steps
  • Receive & Compare Aid Offers

Once you receive your aid offers, carefully review them. These offers detail the types and amounts of aid, including grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities.

Carefully review and compare aid packages from different schools. Consider factors like the total cost of attendance, the mix of grants vs. loans, and any special conditions or requirements attached to the aid.

    Understand the Types of Aid
  • Accept Your Aid

After choosing a college, you must officially accept the financial aid offer. Your financial aid isn't confirmed until you accept it. Follow the instructions provided by the college's financial aid office. This may involve signing agreements and completing additional paperwork.

  • Renew Your Aid

You must reapply for financial aid each year by completing the FAFSA. Your aid package may change from year to year, so carefully review the offer.

The good news is that your information from the previous year will be saved for you and your parents, so it will take less time to complete the application. Adjust any information if your circumstances change and reauthorize your consent to transfer your federal tax info from the IRS or manually input the information.

  • Maintain & Manage Your Aid

Some types of aid, such as scholarships or work-study programs, may have specific requirements that you must meet to be eligible, such as maintaining a certain GPA or fulfilling work obligations. You may also need to submit an additional verification form. Your school will contact you if this is necessary.

Going forward, budget and prioritize your education expenses. Keep track of the loans you’ve taken out. Review your loan terms and repayment options to avoid excessive debt after graduation.
